Better Than Ezra at National Mall, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

My dad and I had gone to Bill Clinton’s first inaugration (and George W. Bush’s before that). The day was bitterly cold, so no one wanted to stand outside, but Heather and I decided to brave it to see Better Than Ezra. It was in a big tent on the mall, and the main thing I remember is my fingers were so cold that clutching a hot chocolate still wasn’t warming them up. I don’t think we stayed for the whole set.

Dave Matthews Band with Béla Fleck and the Flecktones at USAir Arena, Landover, MD, USA

Review:

I won’t hide my love for DMB, but since I’ve been to so many shows, I don’t always listen to the shows I’ve been to. This one I keep coming back to. For most of the second half of the show, Béla Fleck joins them for some truly inspired versions. I was not surprised he showed up as a guest on their next album.

emmet swimming, Sebadoh, Jewel, The Lemonheads, Bloodhound Gang, Social Distortion, The Wallflowers & Sheryl Crow at Patriot Center, Fairfax, VA, USA for HFSMas Nutcracker

Review:

My 3rd HFSMas Nutcracker, and one of my favorite as emmet swimming opened. It was the 1st of only two times so far that producer Don Dixon played with them (also January 2004 when his band opened for them).

While WHFS recorded all their shows, I’m still in 2023 having trouble finding copies of them. This show however is out there in full.

Rush at USAir Arena, Landover, MD, USA

Review:

I ended up seeing the Test for Echo twice – this was the first time. The opportunity to see them perform all of “2112” for the first time was irresistible. “Natural Science” was a nice surprise that became part of their setlists for the rest of their career.
According to Rush: Wandering the Face of the Earth, Geddy introduced songs in a Scottish accent.

Kiss with The Bogmen at USAir Arena, Landover, MD, USA

Review:

I was not part of the Kiss army, but they’re a classic rock band that definitely puts on a good show. When a reunion tour brings clashing personalities together, I hate to miss out on it, so I didn’t. And they brought all the blood and pyrotechnics they’re know for. I liked The Bogmen, but they were very much out of place here.

Pearl Jam with Fastbacks at Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD, USA

Review:

After two life changing Pearl Jam shows, I was excited to see them again. However I was underwhelmed by the show. Part of it was not being a big fan of “No Code” and part of it was being on the lawn in GA. Even hearing “Yellow Ledbetter” live for the first time wasn’t enough, and it would be awhile before I saw them again.
If you really want an in-depth review, check out this podcast. They do a play by play of the show, and it’s ironic that their other topic is using a time machine to go back in time to see shows, as I’d like to experience this show again.
