Review:
I wrote up my trip to England and Ireland for a defunct travel blog. Now those entries live on in my own blog, so another review from 2002:
… we went to The Avalon to see Heather Nova. She’s never played the D.C. area, so I was happy to finally catch her. She was amazing, although Seth was more impressed with Howie Day, who recorded loops while playing guitar and accompanied himself with up to five layers of vocals, percussion, and guitar.

Robbie Schaefer & Jon Carroll at Jammin Java, Vienna, VA, USA
Review:
From my blog (originally from the edhead mailing list):
Let me preface this by saying I really like Jammin’ Java. It’s a little coffee shop with a nice, intimate performance space in back (the lady at the door said there were 108 chairs). The setlist spells it out more, but it was Jon and Robbie switching vocal duties (and sometimes leaving the stage). I kind of expected Mike to be one of the “special guests”, and was happy to see Eddie show up as well. Robbie’s new songs were great (especially Independence, Indiana), but my favorite part of the set was when they asked Julie to come up. Jon sang lead on “Get Closer”, but she sang “Quick” and a smoking version of “Love Me Like A Man”. Robbie confirmed the Wolf Trap show and said that Jon would be joining them at the Birchmere shows and possibly the Wolf Trap one. Bill Danoff (used to be in the Starland Vocal Band with Jon) sang lead on a couple, too (I had no idea he co-wrote Take Me Home, Country Roads).
An actual review from 2002! FYI the four songs Eddie From Ohio played were the only time Jill saw them before we went on the Eddie From Ohio cruise together.

Their first tour, and to preserve the mystique, they played the whole show behind a screen while they projected the animations and we tried to squint to see the band.

I really wanted to see John Mayer at a club because I could tell he was getting too big. It was great, he only had Room For Squares out then.

Creed weren’t my favorite, but my friend John (aka Rusty) wanted to come up from Richmond and see them with me. So I did. Still not my favorite.

The Jayhawks with The Cash Brothers at The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA, USA
Review:
The first real concert for Jill and I. She got the full Birchmere experience, and The Jayhawks were great, performing songs from all eras and trying out songs from what would become Rainy Day Music (for the longset time, “Save It For A Rainy Day” was known as “Pretty Little Hairdo”).

Technically the first concert Jill and I went to, my mom wanted to see her alma mater’s glee club at Jill’s workplace (and ironically future alma mater)

Meat Loaf at D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, USA
Review:
One my favorite concert stories. Meat Loaf had done VH1 Storytellers and released an album of it, and now was touring it. He and his band sat on stage with giant books that had every song he’d ever done, and if he was asked a question he liked, they’d play that song. The show was more than halfway through when one guy came to the microphone, a dead ringer for Meat Loaf as Eddie from The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Meat Loaf saw him, told him to stop and come up to the stage. He talked to the band, who immediately started playing “Hot Patootie”. Meat Loaf and “Eddie” started singing it together, and it was just perfect. Unfortunately the live recording I have cuts out the banter.
