The Cranberries at National Mall, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

A legendary show for all the wrong reasons. I mentioned previously WHFS had been hosting lunchtime shows at Franklin Park in DC, and as they were getting more popular, moved to a theater near the Washington Monument. But thousands showed, and it was a disaster.

Blues Traveler with Xanax 25 at Charles E. Smith Center, George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

My first Blues Traveler show, and Heather came too. I remeber the hard bleacher seats at the Charles E. Smith Center, and really enjoying Blues Traveler. “Run-Around” was a huge hit and the crowd went nuts for it. I really liked their cover of War’s “Low Rider” as well.

Liz Phair at Lisner Auditorium, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

As with many other people, I was a big fan of her first two albums, Exile in Guyville and Whip-Smart. So this show was a must see. It was surprising to learn later she had stagefright in this era, because she played solo and did amazing. She didn’t talk much, but some musicians don’t.

Jon Stewart, Brownstone, Kathy Mattea, Boyz II Men, Sawyer Brown, Bruce Hornsby, Toad the Wet Sprocket & Natalie Merchant at the National Mall, Washington, DC, USA for Earth Day

Review:

My first Earth Day was memorable for a number of ways, but mostly for being the place I met my first long term girlfriend. Chris and I met up with another group of people he knew from TinyTim, and Heather had come with them. I asked her out at the end of the day. The concert was pretty great too. We missed Shawn Colvin and The Mavericks, but got there in time to see Jon Stewart introduce Brownstone, and their first song was an Eagles cover. The other hosts were Levar Burton & Martha Quinn, and we hung out until Natalie Merchant was done, leaving before Mary Chapin Carpenter and Kenny Loggins finished off the day. Reportedly this was the 2nd live performance from Natalie Merchant’s new band including awesome guitarist Jen Turner.
The whole show is up as a stream at C-SPAN.

emmet swimming at Hard Rock Cafe, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

The program says the show I went to was “Invitation only”, so I must have asked Alan, emmet’s manager, for one. The thing I really remember is I went with Anand, my best friend’s brother’s best friend (all 4 of us had been playing a lot of Magic the Gathering together). He drove, and on the way back he got stopped on 66 for speeding.

Great White with Randy Baldwin at Jaxx Nightclub, Springfield, VA, USA

Review:

Great White had been on my list for a while, as they leaned more towards bluesy rock then their glam counterparts. Live in New York is one of my favorite albums of theirs, based just on their cover of Savoy Brown’s Train To Nowhere that has one of the greatest grooves ever. We stayed after the gig to meet the band.
