Extreme with Flesh at Hammerjacks, Baltimore, MD, USA

Review:

Flesh was the younger brothers of Nuno and Gary from Extreme, so this show was all family. If there is such a thing as my least favorite Extreme album, Waiting For The Punchline would be it. As with lots of other bands at the time, they tried to change their style to meet the market (still some great songs, and “Hip Today” is a savage take on the situation). Still, the show was an excellent summary of their career thus far.

Seed with The Gravel Pit & Letters to Cleo at 9:30 Club, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

We got free tickets, which was exciting as I really liked Letters to Cleo. As a matter of fact, I had noticed singer Kay Hanley’s name in the credits for Mary Karlzen’s album, so I brought that and Letters to Cleo’s album for her to sign, and she was really excited to see Mary Karlzen’s album. Seed was good too.

Gilby Clarke at The Bayou, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

The ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist had come out with Pawnshop Guitars, an excellent solo album we’d been playing a lot (having Slash and Axl on it didn’t hurt). A show with those songs plus some tasty covers (including Guns N’ Roses) made for a sweet show.

Lisa Germano, L7, Neil Young & Crazy Horse & Pearl Jam at D.A.R. Constitution Hall, Washington, DC, USA for Voters For Choice

Review:

After such an amazing experience seeing Pearl Jam, I was determined to recapture the magic. They announced they were playing two nights of benefit shows for Voters for Choice at Constitution Hall, and the only way to get tickets was with a postcard lottery. At this point I was working at a record store I co-owned, and we would print and mail brightly colored postcards to our mailing list so I made 20 and sent them in. I got chosen for the first show and took my sister.

It was an amazing show. L7 and Neil Young opened, but the audience was clearly there for Pearl Jam. And they were rewarded for their patience with an epic show featuring plenty of songs from Vitalogy (still my favorite album of theirs). New drummer Jack Irons took on his first full length show without a problem and Neil Young joined them during the encore for Neil’s new song “Act Of Love”.
