Badi Assad, Shannon Curfman, Arlo Guthrie, Sawyer Brown, North Mississippi Allstars, Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, Barenaked Ladies, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young & Willie Nelson at Nissan Pavilion, Bristow, VA, USA for Farm Aid

Review:

Farm Aid returned to Nissan Pavilion for the second year in a row. No Dave Matthews Band this year, but Barenaked Ladies returned, as well as the founders. Plus this year we stuck around long enough to see Willie!

emmet swimming with ebo at 9:30 Club, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

From the emmet swimming concert archives:
“Hey all! I think the 9:30 show last night just may be the best emmet show I’ve ever attended. If not, it was definitely up there at the top! Ebo was fantastic as always (their new CD is great!) and emmet was just in great form. They seemed very happy and into it, and the crowd was fantastic. Todd talked to the crowd a lot more than he did at the last two shows I saw (Alley Katz & TT’s), but I couldn’t understand much of what he said. Still, I think that showed even more how happy and relaxed he seemed to be. I was up near the front, dead center, and everyone around me was singing along to practically every song at the top of their lungs. That’s got to be exciting for the band. It’s amazing what a huge following emmet has here.
A huge chunk of the crowd hung around after Arlington and was chanting first “emmet! emmet!” and then “one more song! one more song!” but we finally gave up when the crew guys started cleaning up the stage. I did spot Erik off to the side of the stage and thought maybe he’d jump back up, but no such luck. I also kind of missed hearing “Bullet”, one of my favorites, but the energy at the show was so excited and upbeat that it would have been odd if they’d played it. During “So Lonely”, when Erik was about to start singing the “I come from the land down under” part, he waited a little longer than usual and the whole crowd just started singing it for him. He looked surprised, then was sort of laughing, then just kind of waved at the crowd to continue, and he only jumped in at the very end for the part “You better run, you better take cover” and then transitioned back into “So Lonely.” It was cool to see the whole crowd that into the song. :)”

Dave Matthews Band with Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, Washington, DC, USA

Review:

Dave Matthews Band decamped from Nissan Pavilion for two terrible years at RFK. The ushers wouldn’t control the crowd when a lot of them were where they shouldn’t be. It was a nice show, especially when Ben Harper guested during the main set/

Todd Watts with Starsky & Hutch at T.T. Reynolds, Fairfax, VA, USA

Review:

From the emmet swimming concert archives:
“so, that was it. i must say that i was quite disappointed that i didn’t get to hear “lose yourself” which i thought he usually played at these things. todd went the democratic way and let the crowd choose between “so pretty” and “lose yourself” and i lost. 🙁
some other random things…
“starsky and hutch” were what ebo dave and smartbomb chuck decided they should call themselves. oh, they did some cool cover songs in their opening bit, by the way. later on when todd was calling them up to the stage to do “don’t dream,” he was looking out into the audience saying “starsky? starsky?”
someone named kim said it was her birthday, and todd said he’d sing her the birthday song if he could play the chords that erik does. so, she didn’t get sung to…
the “strawberry carpet stains” was a funny story. i think that was the only story that todd really told that night? anyway, someone in the audience handed him a shot of vodka or something and he said “this isn’t rum, is it?” and proceeded to tell us all how back in high school, he and a friend drank a whole bottle of rum and then he threw up all over his parents’ carpet and left this big red stain on it. then he told his father that he’d thrown up some soda and it was the color of the caramel dye in the soda… hm, did i get that story right? it doesn’t quite make sense to me any more, so i must have missed something. anyway, that was the gist of it.
i can’t really think of what else to say about the show. i don’t think that it lived up to my expectations, i’m afraid to say… what do the rest of you guys think? i think i like concerts with the full band better. i’m not sure if it’s because that was just my first todd solo show and i had really high expectations. but i think a big part of what makes emmet cool is the dynamic between the band members, which was obviously not there. but aside from that, i loved hearing songs like “a season”, “when morning comes” and “listen to the river”, which are rarely played at full-band shows.”

Jimmy Buffett at Nissan Pavilion, Bristow, VA, USA

Review:

The show was ok. But it will forever be in my mind about how awful parking at Nissan Pavilion can be, as they let anyone in to tailgate and ran out of places to park. So whren we tried to leave early, we discovered Melanie’s Jeep was blocked in by other cars. We tried to move the fence we were against with no luck, and had to wait long after the encore to get out. I never stay through the encore there anymore. This was also the first streamed show I went to – it was at Radio Margaritaville in Real Audio.
