Review:
I started going to shows in earnest in 1994, and Paul McCartney had last toured in 1993, so I was beyond eager for my first show with a Beatle. And while he certainly played tracks from his then new album, the bulk of the show was Beatles and Wings hits, and no one there was unhappy about that, especially Jill and I.

Review:
I remember visiting Jill at her apartment in DC before driving over to the Black Cat. I’m a big fan of Tanya Donelly’s band Belly, and while I’d dragged Chris to a signing they did, had never seen them. I was happy her solo set included several Belly songs.

Jill was already a fan of the Dave Matthews Band, so I got her floor seats (courtesy of the Warehouse fan club). With the songs from The Lillywhite Sessions finally coming out on Busted Stuff, we got a bunch of them, plus Butch Taylor on keys.

The Dubliners at Trafalgar Square, London, England
Review:
Another England blog entry from 2002:
… ended up at Trafalgar Square for the St. Patrick’s Day celebration. It was a crowded, rowdy event; the crowds only started to thin when it started to rain. The Dubliners headlined the event and were quite good, hard to hear since the volume wasn’t cranked like it is at festivals stateside.

… we went to The Avalon to see Heather Nova. She’s never played the D.C. area, so I was happy to finally catch her. She was amazing, although Seth was more impressed with Howie Day, who recorded loops while playing guitar and accompanied himself with up to five layers of vocals, percussion, and guitar.

Robbie Schaefer & Jon Carroll at Jammin Java, Vienna, VA, USA

Let me preface this by saying I really like Jammin’ Java. It’s a little coffee shop with a nice, intimate performance space in back (the lady at the door said there were 108 chairs). The setlist spells it out more, but it was Jon and Robbie switching vocal duties (and sometimes leaving the stage). I kind of expected Mike to be one of the “special guests”, and was happy to see Eddie show up as well. Robbie’s new songs were great (especially Independence, Indiana), but my favorite part of the set was when they asked Julie to come up. Jon sang lead on “Get Closer”, but she sang “Quick” and a smoking version of “Love Me Like A Man”. Robbie confirmed the Wolf Trap show and said that Jon would be joining them at the Birchmere shows and possibly the Wolf Trap one. Bill Danoff (used to be in the Starland Vocal Band with Jon) sang lead on a couple, too (I had no idea he co-wrote Take Me Home, Country Roads).
An actual review from 2002! FYI the four songs Eddie From Ohio played were the only time Jill saw them before we went on the Eddie From Ohio cruise together.
