Chris was missing the HFStival and I missed going to shows with him. So we came up with a crazy plan: I would come up to Boston and see the River Rave with him, then we’d fly down to DC together and do the two day HFStival together. The plan went off with a hitch. I thought the highlight was going to be Joe Perry joining The Black Crowes, but when Aerosmith played “Sweet Emotion”, Tom Hamilton played a long bass intro, and just as they broke into the main part of the song, lightning split the sky directly behind them. Best light show ever.

After bassist Bobby Sheehan passed and they added two more band members, I was eager to see the new lineup, and the show delivered. Review from the time:
The boys came out all wearing hats – Chan and his brother had FBI on the front of theirs, the others had CIA. John said how long it had been since they were last here, and that D.C. was f**ked up then and it still is now. For the second set, they brought one of Ben’s keyboards and a smaller drum set for Brandon. John said they were working on a nickname for Ben – they kinda liked “pudding pants”, but thought maybe “scooter box” or “fistful of nuts” would be better. The second set started acoustic through most of “You Lost Me There”, at which point John and Tad stood up and played while the roadies removed the gear and everyone resumed their positions. During the “Crash Burn” round robin, Ben played during the bass part on the second round. For the encore, John introduced the band, including Ben “crack in the ass” Wilson and Chan “lord of the dance” Kinchla.

Review:
emmet swimming the band went into hibernation after only plaing 3 shows in the summer of 2000. But Todd started playing more solo acoustic, often with the help of Scott Brotemarkle and David Strickland, who joined him for the second half of this show.

Their first full tour, and I’d been a big fan since the Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12-24 had hit the radio (it was big when I worked for Waxie-Maxie, and I had to special order a lot of copies of Savatage’s Dead Winter Dead since that was the only place you could get it on CD for a while). I recall quite the extensive use of the smoke machine as it rolled off the stage into the audience.

As a big Extreme, I was excited to learn that singer Gary Cherone was playing a lead role (the band often covers a bit of “What’s The Buzz” in concerts). I’d apparently missed him playing Jesus, but I was happy to see him play Judas. I stayed with Chris and he and Jess tried to set me up with Mindy, but I don’t think either of us felt it. From blog.hemisphire.com: “Dinner was chicken in garlic from Tum Tum’s Thai Takeaway, then back to Hodern Pavilion for No Doubt. Opener Area-7 was very similar to Goldfinger, and the crowd was into it, but they were waiting for No Doubt. Their set was heavy on material from Return To Saturn, but they played all the hits from Tragic Kingdom, as well as “Trapped In A Box” from their debut. Gwen was very enthusiastic all night, turning cartwheels at one point.”
